Professional Travel Grant

Through the Faculty Development Committee, Portland State University offers an internal funding program for Portland State University faculty. The Professional Travel Grant Program provides support for faculty and staff who are AAUP bargaining unit members holding appointments of .50 FTE or higher to attend professional meetings and conferences to present scholarly work.

The Committee will meet once per term to make awards. See deadlines below.

Guidelines

  • Requests of up to $1,500 per individual for travel funds may be made to the Faculty Development Committee.
  • The Faculty Development Committee shall not approve travel requests unless the request is matched by at least $100 or 20% of the estimated travel cost (whichever is greater) for requests over $750 in department, grant, contract, or personal funds. Each travel request must indicate all sources of funds to be used in the requested professional travel.
  • The request must be endorsed by the faculty member's department chair or equivalent.
  • The committee must receive applications no later than the deadlines for each term, stated below. Due to the increased number of applications each term, late submissions will NOT be reviewed. Applications must be for the travel period designated for that term (see below for schedule). Applications submitted for a prior term's travel period will NOT be reviewed.
  • Even if you have not yet received formal notification of your paper or presentation's acceptance by the conference, you must submit a proposal for review in the term corresponding to your proposed travel period.
  • Travel must include presentation of scholarly work, such as a paper, workshop, or seminar. Preference will be given to applications that are most clearly related to a faculty member's scholarly agenda or which clearly demonstrate that the travel will have a significant impact on the professional development of the faculty member, particularly of junior faculty.
  • Additional funding is available for disabled faculty or staff who require a travel companion.
  • The committee will only fund one professional travel request per person each fiscal year (July 1 - June 30), so faculty should consider their travel priorities.

Requirements

  • Include the dates and destination of your proposed travel, a brief narrative describing the purpose of your travel and how it fits with your scholarly agenda (no more than 2-3 paragraphs), an abstract of the presentation, and a budget detailing your expected costs and the amount of matching funds that will be provided.
  • In addition to your application, you must provide the Committee with documentation (such as a copy of the conference program, a letter or e-mail of acceptance, etc.) that you will be presenting your scholarly work at the conference or meeting you plan to attend.
  • Applications must include your Department Chair's signature. If your Department Chair is unavailable, the signature of his or her approved proxy is acceptable. Your Department Chair is not responsible for forwarding your application to ORSP by the term deadline.
  • Even if you have not yet received formal notification of acceptance, you must submit a proposal for review in the term designated for that travel period. Any award made in this situation is contingent upon the Committee's receipt of this documentation when it becomes available.
  • Documentation of conference registration fees, estimate/quote for transportation and lodging costs is required for committee's review. Travel authorization forms are not acceptable as documentation.

Travel Request Forms

Applications must be submitted to the Office of Research and Sponsored Projects (ORSP), Unitus Building, 6th floor, and must contain the following:

  • A completed Travel Request Form (available in PDF file format via the link below) signed by the department Chair.
  • Documentation that the applicant has been accepted to present at the conference (such as a copy of the conference program, a letter or e-mail of acceptance, etc.).
  • Documentation of conference registration fees and estimate/quote for transportation and lodging costs.
